Before Bruce Thomson aka Bluey Boronia became a business owner, life was pretty different.
“I worked at a city hospital as an orderly. Initially the role involved the collection and return of patients to and from the peri-operative department gradually changing to other non-clinical duties including the re-stocking of consumables and other tasks within the theatre suite,” says Bruce.
These days, you’ll catch him at his shop Perch by Bluey Boronia, a carefully curated selection of treasures, trinkets and trophies, publications, affordable art, objects and collectibles for sale.
The idea of Bluey Boronia (a pseudonym referring to creative projects with a ‘blue sky’ aka an anything is possible attitude of turning ideas into reality) was bubbling long before the shop came to fruition. After a series of unfortunate events, Bruce decided to further explore his idea.
“The concept was an opportunity to explore my personal passions and purpose at my own pace. Although the “seed” was planted many years ago,” explains Bruce.
With the help of Renew Adelaide, this ‘blue sky’ creative project turned curated retail offer saw Bruce evolving into a certified business owner.
“I treated each step as a growing experience to plan the ideal space. I stayed true to the aesthetic and vision. I was resourceful and stuck to a budget. For the pop up phase, I invested enough to convey the look and feel and then got feedback.”
Voila. Perch by Bluey Boronia – a celebration of mindfulness and well-being merchandise – was born.
